Buy VPS with BTC

Bitcoin in, SSH keys out.

On-chain BTC still works. Lightning is better for $6–20 monthly plans. This list is VPS hosts tagged for Bitcoin or Lightning checkout, sorted by privacy score.

To buy a VPS with BTC without feeding a KYC exchange the hosting invoice, send coins to the host. BTCPay Server and in-house Bitcoin Core / SHKeeper setups are the cleanest path. BitPay is the opposite: an account, often identity, then a deposit.

Lightning Network invoices confirm in seconds and do not litter the chain with a standing order to a known hosting xpub — useful when you rotate providers. Filter Lightning if on-chain fees would eat the first month. The filtered host list is on Lightning VPS.

Resellers of DigitalOcean, Vultr, Linode, and Hetzner exist specifically so you can pay BTC while the upstream still wants a card. Read whether they are a named reseller or a Mullvad-style token account; the privacy properties are not the same.

Questions people bring to the scope

What is the cheapest way to buy a VPS with BTC?+

Pay on-chain or over Lightning directly to the host. Custodial gateways add spread. A few hosts discount BTC (ChunkHost lists 5%). Lightning avoids on-chain fees, which matters for $5–15/month plans.

Can I pay a VPS invoice with Lightning?+

Yes, if the host or their processor exposes a BOLT11 invoice or LNURL. Self-hosted BTCPay and LND setups are the most reliable. Some NOWPayments and CoinGate checkouts also offer LN.

Is BTCPay Server better than BitPay for privacy?+

Usually. BTCPay is self-hosted: the merchant sees the payment, not a KYC’d intermediary. BitPay often requires an account and identity checks. If the notes say BitPay, treat that as a KYC risk even when the host itself is relaxed.
